How we help

See the 3 astonishing facts we found...

  1. Almost 50% of Americans will experience a mental illness within their lifetime. [1]
  2. 1 in 4 Americans said they had to choose between getting treatment and paying for daily necessities. [2]
  3. 74% of Americans do not believe that mental health services are available for everyone. [3]

Through this discovery, and their lived experiences, Justin and Kevin were led to create Habitual Roots as a nonprofit organization.

They built what they felt was needed most – a positive community for those looking to live a heathy and balanced lifestyle; a community centered around wellness and affordable  access to practices that combat mental illness and its symptoms.

The Problem...

Almost half of the adults (46.4%) in the United States will experience a mental illness during their lifetime. In fact, half of all mental disorders begin by age 14 and three-quarters by age 24. This makes young adults (aged 18-26) the most susceptible age group for developing a mental illness.

Our Solution

By providing fun, accessible, and stigma-free community events and programs, we are tackling the issues of loneliness, stress, and anxiety.

Habitual Roots is a wellness-based community focused on providing resources for those looking to build a more sustainable and intentional lifestyle. We are here to create intentional space for meaningful connection, community, and well-being - expanding the awareness of individuals to mindfully care for each other and themselves.

Asking why we have certain routines, cultural expectations, beliefs and more allows room for reflection, speculation, and change.

This is why we are here to inspire curiosity, play, and human connection- one conversation, one event, one moment at a time. We believe all people need a safe space, resources, supportive habits, and deep relationships in order to establish and hold a healthy well-being.

Our Programs

Habitual Yoga
Since conception in 2019, Habitual Roots has provided community yoga practice for over 4000 individuals in both the Charlotte and Denver areas. Yoga is proven to reduce stress and anxiety, while also encouraging connection and self-care. We don’t only encourage peace and serenity on the mat, but also hold space before and after class for our community to discuss how they will embody their practice off the mat. People who engage in yoga are also prone to quit smoking and improve their quality of life. All of Habitual Roots’ instructors have been trained in either 200 or 500 hour Yoga Teacher Training.

Meditation & Breathwork
Being able to take a breath, notice sensations in the body, and thoughts that arise during day to day experiences are proven practices for helping those who struggle with anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Habitual Roots partners with local businesses to provide easily accessible meditation and breathwork sessions for anyone interested in practicing independently or with the community.

Mindful Hiking & Forest Healing
The medical community is waking up to the connection between time spent in nature and our health. Some doctors have begun writing nature prescriptions for some of their patients. In Japan, the practice of shinrin-yoku (“taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing”) has become an accepted part of medical care. Doctors realize their stressed-out, overworked patients don’t need a pill, but a good dose of quiet, calm, mindful time in the forest.

During a Forest Bath, it does not matter if you get anywhere, that is not the goal. The goal is to have no worries. You are savoring every sound, smell, and sight of the therapeutic forest atmosphere.

Intuitive Book Club
An intuitive book club allows everyone to bring whatever book they choose and creates an opportunity to discuss what they're learning, find new and interesting books, authors, or themes to explore, and have heart-centered and expansive conversations with a community of people all looking to share their passions and support others while learning something new and exciting along the way!

Wellness Support Groups

Social Support is vital for maintaining good physical and mental health. Through our men’s and women’s wellness groups, resilience is the primary focus as individuals share about their daily experiences with stress and anxiety. Learning how to navigate unwanted emotions is not always a comfortable practice, and can sometimes lead to negative coping mechanisms. This is why we fully embody the practice of being in community and supporting each other in developing positive coping skills.

*Wellness Support Group Offerings are chapter specific and vary on community needs

Wellness Coaching
For those interested in working one-on-one with a wellness coach, Habitual Roots offers affordable support on a sliding scale. Coaches empower community members through personal goal development while helping them break free from old habits. Establishing sustainable change and a deeper awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, and actions is how Habitual Roots’ coaches assist their clients in their personal growth.

ROOTS: Self-Awareness & Resilience Training
This 8 week program is designed to help new practitioners learn the basics of emotional intelligence, habit recognition, and embody intentional practices to strengthen resilience. After the completion of this program, you’ll walk away with self awareness and self management practices to help identify how your thoughts, actions, and emotions impact your overall well-being.
